As I was making my bed this morning before heading downstairs, I flipped my little daily calendar (Seize the Day) on my cedar chest to see today’s message. It said, “NEW BEAUTY meets us at every step in all our wanderings.” – John Muir

I loved this as I try daily to find beautiful things to make me smile and be grateful for; Rebecca’s sleepy face when she gets up, the sunrise, the sky, the sound of the birds, the flowers,…. falling into bed at night! When I went downstairs to fix breakfast and make Rebecca’s lunch, I did my usual turning on of the computer and flipping the little daily calendar in the kitchen (okay I love calendars- this one is Mary Engelbreit). When I read Mary’s message for today, it said, “Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumblebee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.” – Ashley Smith

The universe was trying to tell me something. Both calendars with similar messages on the same day! Actually I’ve been doing just what they were saying since I was quite young, but perhaps I didn’t truly appreciate the beauty around me in the same way as I do now. So I wanted to share this with you. Take time to smell the roses as the saying goes. Take time each and every day to notice the little things. Look beyond the cars on the road, your computer, your phone, the “big” picture. Go outside, look around. Don’t just look….see. See the trees, but look closer. See the blossoms, the shiny new leaves, the colors. See the sky, but look closer. See the blue and the clouds. What shape are the clouds? Do they remind you of anything? Remember when you played that game as a child or with your own children? It’s never too late to find a bunny in the sky!

Today, as I was taking my little walk during my break at work, I took a couple of turns around the park across the street (I can just about do this in the allotted 10 minute break time-okay it takes more like 12 or 13 minutes). As I was walking, I remembered the messages and thoughts began to race through my mind. The air was still a little cool, and the sun was warm on my back. It felt glorious! There were squirrels running around the grass and up the trees. The sound of the birds grew louder as I got closer to the little group of trees surrounding the little man made stream. Such a lovely surprise at the back of the park. There is a boardwalk crossing over the stream with benches to sit on and just listen to the running water. Yesterday and today there was a single Mallard duck. He thinks he is quite the master there with his shiny green crown. He was sitting on the boardwalk today as I walked up. He quacked several times, I think telling me to get lost. But I said hello and kept on walking. He jumped in the water and let me pass without incident. I continued on my way around the lawn and headed back into the building. I’ve done this before off and on in the year I’ve worked this job, and when it gets busy I forget, or just don’t get my rear end up and off the chair. I’ve been getting out for four days in a row now and am going to make myself “remember” every day. I even brought my little “Walk” rock and put on my desk as a reminder. It’s working!!


I believe if you do take time to stop, use the senses God gave you, and notice the little things around you, you will be a more peaceful and joyous human being.

Go out and do it today!!
